A black man takes to his knee to bring awareness and find solidarity with his brothers and sisters who are being killed by the people in power. He was dismissed as entitled, mocked, shamed, his patriotism questioned and even the president was quoted saying, "You have to stand proudly for the national anthem or you shouldn't be playing, you shouldn't be there, maybe you shouldn't be in the country". Who decided that? Who, in this country where we have incredible freedoms such as saying anything, be it truth or lie, we want on social media with little to no repercussion, decided that we must stand to prove our patriotism?
As black lives continued to be snuffed out and much of white America prove themselves deaf to cries of mothers losing their children, of fathers realizing they've already uttered their last words to their offspring, or brothers hearing their keeper of secrets and collective memories cry out in pain for their mama, the people are fighting back. What else were they expecting? Colin to take a knee again? Another high profile African American to do something that offends to bring attention to the plight of the black experience?
This will keep happening until all of us realize that the systemic racism, the built in poverty......really, what does this simple, upper middle income white woman know??? I've no idea. It's not my voice that needs to be listened to. It's George Floyd's voice we need to hear:
'I can’t breathe' . 'Mama' and 'please,'
Whether he passed a bad check or not, whether he was on drugs or not, he did not deserve to be killed by someone that was so casual that he could have been stepping on an insect. Wake up!
I would like to think that patriots want to build a better American for everyone.
PREACH IT!
