It's All Relative...

My very favorite relative would be my mother but I am taking her out of the ranks. In fact, I am taking immediate family out of the running. After them, who is your favorite relative and why?

My mother's sister would be that person. She is strong but so vulnerable, wise but does not give advice where it is not asked and she is fair. Gay thinks things through, looks at it from both sides and never jumps to conclusions. She loves fiercely, is an amazing mother, grandmother and great grandmother and auntie to me.

Now in her 80's, I still call her every other week and we can talk for hours, yet it seems like minutes. She stays up on current events, loves home crafts like knitting, crochet and needlepoint and adores her husband of over 60 years. He adores her too.

In her younger years, she has backpacked across the Sierras with her sons Boy Scout troops or water skied behind their boat on the Colorado River and was a long term member of a square dance club that only stopped because too many of to group had passed away to keep it up. She is happy, the eternal optimist and sees the bright side of things. In regards to Trump, she smiles and says, "This too shall pass."  She's been through the overdose death of a son, diabetes and breast cancer but these roadblocks and many others never stole her inner joy.

I love her with all my heart because of who she is, because she holds a big part of my mom within her and simply because she loves me back. I am grateful to have her in my life.

How about you? Do you have someone special?

  2. She sounds like a real joy! Most of my aunties and uncles are gone now but there is one aunt and uncle whose company I enjoy. A couple of others whose company I don't.

  6. No I wish I did. Rick is my go to.
I have to be my own cheerleader and Rick does a great Rah Rah for me for everything.
Sadly that is it. I am that for many and it's tough if I am honest to always be the go to person and not have one for yourself. (other than Rick)

  7. My favorite relative would be a cousin of mine who is younger than me, in fact, she is the only cousin younger than me and the youngest of all the cousins. She's a strong, smart, funny woman who lives her life how she wants to. She's brave.

  8. Well, I have no immediate family so that's out! My favorite is my cousin Mutty. She's a few years younger but more like a sister than a cousin. She and her brother and sister were my summer family growing up and I treasure them all!
